Mix: 11. Many Songs About Love

“Why are there so many songs about love?” that’s the heavy question posited by one Terry Day in “Luv, Luv, Luv”. As he goes about trying to deduce the many reasons we love one another, he fails to land on a specific motive. Terry figures it out the answer, and comes to it, as an open question: “Why do we die for it?”. The onus, in the end, for each person, is to figure out what we’re willing to surrender for that other, which moves us so profoundly. It’s that onus which struck me, this springtime, to make a mix for dublab (which you can directly stream here) circling on that very human meditation: “love”. When asked to come up with a meaning behind this site and this mix, all I could think of was: “it’s all about love.”

I could write about the past, in terms already couched by others — about music already suited by, and poured over, by others. I couldn’t, though. FOND/SOUND was never going to be about this. It was going to be about that love which has no words, about a love we had to find our own words for. It was about a love that extended far beyond music — stuff that is meaningful enough to devote my time to, to make peace in caring for, in sharing with others. In this day and age, I believe, sincerely caring about things is still important. And for me, to care about music that was made with that utmost feeling has been no vice. Caring enough to look at those cracks others skipped over has led me to all sorts of wonderful places. Love begins up high, but it always ends up closer to your feet — only if you stop long enough and pay attention.

It is my hope — that as long as you’re with me — we’re in some kind of journey together. You know, right now, it’s springtime and love’s anew.
